Modular Routers

by desht

Modular Routers lets one router block take on many jobs, depending on which module items are plugged into it.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.5 – 26.2

What it does

A router pulls items from an inventory and sends them to other inventories nearby or far away. Installed modules decide what a router does: one lets it set down items as placed blocks, another clears blocks already in place, and further modules drop items into the world, pick up dropped items, or throw items over long distances. Combining modules in one block lets a player build item-moving contraptions without many separate machines.

Sorting is one of the module functions, and its filters go beyond matching an item, its metadata or its NBT data. Patchouli is required, so it must be installed alongside Modular Routers. Modular Routers is published for Forge and NeoForge across 13 release versions, 1.16.5 – 26.2, and the code is open source under the MIT License. Mekanistic Routers is one of the catalog mods that requires it. Players and servers both need the mod, since it runs on client and server.

Key features

  1. Item pulling and sending

The router takes items from one inventory and delivers them to other inventories, near or far.

  2. Placing and breaking blocks

Modules let a router place items as blocks or break existing blocks in its target area.

  3. Dropping and absorbing items

Routers can drop items into the world or absorb dropped items lying nearby.

  4. Flinging items

A fling module throws items across the world to a chosen spot.

  5. Advanced sorting filters

Sorting modules support filters that check more than item type, metadata or NBT.

Use cases

Automated item transport

A single router replaces a chain of conveyors or separate machines when items need to move between storage areas.

Compact contraptions

Players combine modules in one block to build item-manipulating setups without a large footprint.

Who it’s for: Players who build automated storage and item logistics on Forge or NeoForge, and server owners who run Technology packs with item handling.

How it compares

Full comparison

Tiny Pipes covers item transport through pipes and is published for Forge and NeoForge across 1.20 – 26.3, under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Advanced Generators is a Forge-only mod for 1.18.2 – 1.20.1 under the MIT License, and it focuses on power generation rather than item movement. Ender IO - OC Conduits is a Forge mod for 1.12.2 under The Unlicense, and it is built around conduits for a different networking purpose.

What the author says

... and more. Possibilities abound for interesting item-manipulating contraptions. While plenty other mods can do all of the above, Modular Routers can do these things in one block, just by plugging in the right combination of modules.
