What it does

Mods that add many status effects can run short of potion IDs in a modpack. This coremod lifts that ceiling so a pack can register far more effects before it runs out. It works by changing how the game's potion ID limit is handled at a low level, and it is limited to Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge.

The mod is needed on both the client and the server, since both sides must agree on the extended IDs. A client that connects to a server without it can run into odd and unpredictable results, and it may be unable to join at all. Back up the world before installing or removing the mod, because the change can damage existing worlds. Porting to later versions is not planned: the code is extremely difficult to backport, and newer releases of the game support more potion IDs natively.

Files cover only 1.12.2. The latest Forge file is 1.0.3, published on 2024-06-16. The project is open source under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Higher potion ID limit

Lifts the cap on potion effect IDs, which is a 32-bit integer close to 2 billion, for packs with many status effects.

  2. Coremod approach

Works as a small coremod that changes the limit at load time, so the rest of the mod set is left alone.

  3. Client and server pairing

Requires the same version on both sides, so a client without it cannot connect to a server that runs it.

  4. Back up before changes

Installing or removing the mod can break existing worlds, so a backup is advised first.

Use cases

Large modpacks

Pack builders who combine many status-effect mods can use the extra ID space to avoid running out of potion IDs.

Who it’s for: Modpack authors and server owners running Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge, who combine several mods that each add status effects.

Questions

Does Max Potion ID Extender need to be installed on both sides?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Which Minecraft versions does the mod support?

Only 1.12.2. The author notes that later versions support more potion IDs natively, so the mod is not backported.

Can the mod be safely added to an existing world?

Back up the world first. Installing or uninstalling the mod can break worlds, so a copy should exist before any change.

What the author says

With the amount of mods adding status effects and potion effects, it is not uncommon to find yourself short of IDs when building your own modpack. Enter: Max Potion ID Extender. It's a small coremod that lifts the limit to the max value of a 32bit integer (something around 2 Billion IDs).
