Lumi Lighting Engine Optimizer

by FalsePattern

Lumi Lighting Engine Optimizer replaces the lighting engine of Minecraft 1.7.10 with a faster implementation, and works on Forge only.

What it does

Lumi is a full replacement for the vanilla lighting engine, with an extendable API that ships alongside a Phosphor reference implementation. Its main speed gain comes from evaluating lighting lazily, which lets it batch many lighting updates into a single pass. The author describes a profiling run covering world creation and a short flight in creative mode, which showed the server thread spending 34% of its active time in the lighting engine without Lumi and about 13% with it, roughly a 2.5x increase over vanilla. The author notes the profile also covers world generation and server lag spikes.

Lumi requires ChunkAPI, FalsePatternLib and UniMixins at the minimum versions the author lists. Its configuration files are modified automatically when the game launches, so players normally do not need to edit them by hand. Colored Lights (RPLE) requires Lumi. The mod is published for Forge with a single game version, 1.7.10, and the latest file is 1.2.2, dated 2026-08-09. It runs on the client and the server, so both sides need it. It is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later and is open source, with public source code and an issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Lazy lighting evaluation

Lighting updates are evaluated lazily, so several updates can be batched and processed in one pass.

  2. Replacement lighting engine

The vanilla lighting engine is replaced entirely, with an API other code can extend and a Phosphor reference implementation.

  3. Automatic configuration

The required configuration files are changed automatically on launch, so a manual edit is usually unnecessary.

  4. Profiling reference

The author documents a profile comparing server time spent in the lighting engine with and without Lumi, including a call stack view.

What the author says

A full replacement of the Minecraft lighting engine with an extendable API, shipping with Phosphor as a reference implementation. The main performance improvement comes from the fact that the lighting engine is evaluated "lazily", thus it is able to batch more lighting updates into a single pass.
