Lighty

by andi-makes

Lighty draws a transparent carpet-like block on top of blocks to show light levels, with an optional mode that renders the numbers themselves in its own style.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltBTA BabricClient-side onlyApache License 2.0Open sourceb1.7.3 – 26.3

What it does

Rather than drawing markers or digits on the upper surface of blocks, the mod renders a transparent carpet-like layer over them, colored by the spawning rules for that spot. A later update added a mode that draws the actual light level numbers, shown in the Lighty style. The overlay can be switched on or off with a key, and the key is set in the key binds menu.

The mod is a client mod, so only the client needs it; servers run without it. It is released under the Apache License 2.0 and the source code is open source. Fabric API and HalpLibe are required, and Mod Menu (BTA Port) is optional. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with snapshot builds included, across game versions b1.7.3 – 26.3 covering 26 release versions. The latest Fabric and NeoForge files target 26.3, and the latest Forge and Quilt files target 1.20.1.

Key features

  1. Carpet-like light overlay

A transparent block is drawn on top of each block, showing whether mobs can spawn on that surface.

  2. Spawn color coding

Green marks spots where no mobs can spawn, orange marks spots where mobs spawn only after the sun goes down, and red marks spots where mobs can spawn.

  3. Light level numbers

A mode renders the actual light level numbers on block tops, drawn in the Lighty style instead of plain text.

  4. Quick toggle

A separate key turns the overlay on or off at once, so the view can be checked without opening the menu.

  5. Configurable keys

Both the mode key and the toggle key can be changed in the key binds menu.

Use cases

Checking mob spawns

A player can scan a built area and see which surfaces allow mobs to appear, and where they appear only at night.

Planning lighting

The numbers mode lets a builder check light levels across a base before placing torches or lamps.

Who it’s for: The mod suits players who build bases or farms and need to know where mobs can spawn. It is installed on the client only, so players on a server need it themselves.

Questions

Does Lighty need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and HalpLibe is required as well. Both must be installed next to Lighty.

Does the server need Lighty?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it.

Which loader should a player choose?

Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest Fabric and NeoForge files target 26.3, while the latest Forge and Quilt files target 1.20.1.

Can the key be changed?

Yes. The mode key and the toggle key are both configurable in the key binds menu.

What the author says

Instead of rendering crosses or numbers on the top face of blocks, Lighty takes a different approach - It renders a transparent carpet-like block on top! Or, new in version 1.1.0 - Renders the actual light level numbers, but Lighty Style! Make sure to check out the Gallery for some pictures!
