Haunted Chat

by nothurn

Haunted Chat makes unsettling messages appear in the player's chat window, sent at random intervals to suit what the player is doing.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.19.2 – 1.21.1

What it does

Messages arrive at random intervals and are written to address the player directly, as if someone nearby were talking to them. What gets said depends on the situation around the player: standing still too long, digging deep underground, or playing late at night while alone on a low-population server each trigger their own set of lines. When no specific trigger applies, messages are drawn from a general pool.

The mod runs on the client and the server together, so both sides need it installed. Server owners can switch the mod on or off, set the window that governs message timing, choose whether messages use the player's actual in-game name, and decide whether a message is broadcast to everyone online or delivered to each player individually. Haunted Core is an optional dependency that some setups use alongside it.

The mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source. Files exist for 1.19.2, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, published for Forge and NeoForge, with the latest Forge and NeoForge releases at version 2.0.2 for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 respectively, both dated 2026-09-07. The first release came out on 2026-07-14.

Use cases

Horror on a shared server

Server owners can run the mod for a group, with broadcast messages reaching every online player at once.

Solo atmosphere

A single player can keep per-player messages on, so only their own chat receives them.

Who it’s for: Server owners who want unsettling chat lines during play, and players who enjoy horror atmosphere in survival worlds. Both the server and every player need the mod.

Questions

Does Haunted Chat have to be installed on both sides?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Does Haunted Chat need Haunted Core?

What the author says

Every so often, something sends you a short message in chat. Not narration — addressed straight at you. Messages trigger at random intervals, delivered directly to chat like someone (or something) is actually talking to you.
