Grappling Hooke

by catfisj

Grappling Hooke adds a grappling hook to the game that behaves like a spring, pulling or pushing the player toward and away from the block it attaches to.

FabricClient and serverGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source26.1.2

What it does

The hook follows Hooke's law, the idealised linear elastic spring relation, so the pull grows with the distance from its resting length. The default resting range is 4 blocks, and when the hook attaches to a block it tries to pull the player toward that block or push them away.

Three enchantments adjust the hook: Stiffness raises the acceleration the spring applies, and Resting Range changes the resting distance, with levels reaching 3-5, 2-6 and 1-7 blocks. Holding sneak and scrolling, or using fire and scrolling, changes the resting distance in steps of 0.5 blocks, or 0.1 blocks with both.

Fabric API is required. Area Lib is optional and, when installed, lets server owners disallow hook use in areas marked with the grapplinghooke:disallow component. Item Descriptions is also an optional dependency. The mod runs on client and server, and it is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. Files are published for Fabric only, for 26.1.2.

Key features

  1. Spring-like hook

The hook pulls or pushes the player according to a linear elastic spring model, with the pull set by distance from the resting length.

  2. Stiffness enchantment

Stiffness at three levels increases the acceleration the hook's spring applies to the player.

  3. Resting range enchantment

Resting Range at three levels sets how far the hook's resting length reaches, with ranges of 3-5, 2-6 and 1-7 blocks.

  4. Adjustable resting distance

Sneak with scroll or fire with scroll changes the resting distance in 0.5 block steps, or 0.1 blocks when both are held.

What the author says

The hook added in this mod follows the physics of an idealised (linear elastic) spring, i.e. Hooke's law - instead of pulling you all the way to the hook, it attempts to pull you to (by default) 4 blocks away. For extra fun, the hook itself also follows these physics when it's not embedded in a block. The mod also…
