Glow Squid Spawn Fix
by frikinjay
Glow Squid Spawn Fix changes where glow squids can spawn, so they appear in fully submerged water rather than clinging to cave walls at water edges.
What it does
Vanilla Minecraft lets glow squids spawn in water blocks that sit directly next to air, which places them at edges and leaves some spawned in random water columns generated during world generation. Those squids fall out of the column, die and drop glow ink sacs, which can leave unnecessary items in the world, including in chunks that are not loaded. The mod adds a validation step to the spawn check: a spawn attempt is cancelled if any of the four horizontal neighbors of the spawn position is air.
The mod works through a simple mixin and runs on the server alone, so only the server needs it and players join without installing anything. Its performance overhead is described as negligible. Farms built on a water column that touches air at one side will stop producing squids at that spot, because the new check rejects it. Farm designs need to keep solid water on all horizontal sides of the spawn area. The mod is published for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with the latest file 1.0.0 for 26.3 dated 2026-01-26, and it is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, so it is not open source. Snapshot builds are published as well.
Key features
Submerged spawn locations
Glow squids spawn in water that is fully submerged, instead of at the edges where water meets air.
Horizontal neighbor check
Before a squid spawns, the four horizontal neighbors of the spawn position are checked, and an air neighbor cancels the attempt.
Fewer stray drops
Squids no longer spawn in random water columns that fall out and die, so glow ink sacs are not left behind in unloaded chunks.
Simple, low-cost check
The added validation is a single extra condition in the spawn logic, and its performance cost is described as negligible.

What the author says
Vanilla Minecraft allows glow squids to spawn in water blocks that are directly adjacent to air, which can lead to them spawning in random water columns that generate during world-gen, they then fall out of the column and die, dropping glow ink sacs which stay in the world in loaded and unloaded chunks.
