Global Character Replace

by Bl3ue

Global Character Replace swaps chosen characters and strings in the text the game displays, through a config file that the player edits.

ForgeClient-side onlyMIT License1.20.1

What it does

The mod is a client-side replacement layer for on-screen text. The player lists the characters or full strings to change, and the mod substitutes them wherever the game draws text. Because the work happens on the client, a server running the game does not need it, and players can join servers without installing anything.

Replacement covers more than the main game screens. Interface text, Patchouli guide books, and screens from recipe and item viewers such as JEI and REI are included, so a single rule applies across the whole interface. Changes are made in the config, and the released Forge build is 1.0.0 for 1.20.1, published 2026-07-16 under the MIT License. The mod is not open source.

Key features

  1. Single character replacement

Individual characters can be swapped for other characters, changing how one letter appears throughout the game.

  2. Full string replacement

Whole words or phrases can be swapped, for cases where a single character rule is too narrow.

  3. Config-driven rules

Each replacement pair is written in the config file, so rules can be added, removed, or edited without touching code.

  4. Interface and guide text

Patchouli books and recipe viewer screens such as JEI and REI are covered alongside the standard interface text.

Use cases

Renaming text in a modpack

A pack author can rewrite a term that appears across menus and guides without editing language files.

Personal display preference

A player who wants certain letters or words shown differently can set the rules on their own client.

Who it’s for: Players and pack makers who want to change how specific characters or phrases appear on their own screens. Because it is client-side, it is useful where the server should stay unmodified.
