Flooded Nether

by kuylar

Flooded Nether replaces the air pockets of the Nether with water, so the caverns that players breathe in while crossing fortresses and bastions fill up instead.

What it does

Minecraft places small air-filled spaces inside Nether Fortresses and Bastions, and Flooded Nether swaps those spaces for water. Chunks generated after the mod is installed fill with water, and chunks created earlier are flooded when they load. Removing the mod causes newly generated chunks to stop being flooded.

The change is purely about terrain. Lava oceans are left as they are, and water placed next to a lava ocean can cause lag, which the author asks players to avoid by keeping blocks away from that boundary. Fish, dolphins and turtles can spawn in the new water inside the Nether, so the underground areas gain marine life that vanilla does not give them.

The mod is published for Fabric only, for Minecraft 1.20.1 alone, and it is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only. It runs on the server side only, so players join without installing it, and Flooded Nether requires no other mod.

Key features

  1. Water in Nether pockets

Air pockets inside Nether Fortresses and Bastions are replaced with water rather than remaining as breathable air.

  2. Flooding of existing chunks

Older Nether chunks that were generated before installation are flooded with water once they load.

  3. Marine mobs in the Nether

Fish, dolphins and turtles spawn inside the flooded Nether areas.

  4. Lava ocean caution

The author notes that placing blocks right next to a lava ocean can cause lag, so the boundary should be left alone.

Questions

Does Flooded Nether need to be installed on every player's client?

No. The mod is server-side only, so players can join a server that runs it without installing anything.

Do chunks already generated before installing Flooded Nether change?

Yes. Older Nether chunks are flooded with water when they are loaded, while newly generated chunks follow the same rule from the start.

Which Minecraft version does Flooded Nether support?

The mod is published for Minecraft 1.20.1 only, on Fabric, with version 1.0 as the latest file from 2023-07-30.

Can the mod be removed later?

Yes. Removing the mod causes newly generated chunks to stop filling with water, while those already flooded keep their water.

What the author says

A mod that replaces (almost) every single air pocket in the nether with boiling hot water. Don't worry, you won't burn in it. Already generated nether chunks will not fill with water. If you remove this mod, then newly generated chunks will not fill with water.
