Flimsy Torches

by pbloaf

With Flimsy Torches, every torch placed in the world slowly burns out, and torches carry a chance to turn into flimsy versions when a chunk first loads.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.16.4 – 1.21.1

What it does

Torches burn through four states before they are depleted, and the same mechanic extends to lanterns, candles, campfires and waxed torches. Burnt out torches can be recycled to make new torches cheaper, and torch scraps return part of the coal used to make them. Regular torches are still obtainable, though crafting them takes additional effort through a flimsy torch recipe that uses magma cream, while soul torches are crafted from soul sand or soil.

The mod changes how torches behave in the world, so it suits survival worlds where light is a resource to manage. Villagers can replace nearby torches that have burnt out, and blazing campfires spread fire to nearby blocks at their maximum state. Fuel and burn behavior can be adjusted in the config, which also accepts custom items as campfire fuel.

Installation runs on Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.16.4, 1.16.5, 1.19.2, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. Installation covers the server and each player's game. It is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Four-state torch decay

Torches move through four states, and each depleted torch disappears from the world.

  2. Flimsy campfires

Campfires burn through five states and accept logs and planks as fuel when right-clicked.

  3. Blazing campfire spread

At its maximum state a campfire spreads fire to blocks around it, and this behavior can be set in the config.

  4. Villager torch replacement

Villagers replace nearby torches once they burn out, so village lighting stays maintained.
