Fantasy Metals (archived)

by Team Solar

Fantasy Metals, an archived Forge mod for 1.20.1, adds four metals and five gems found across the Overworld, Nether and End.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1

What it does

Ores for the new metals and gems are placed in the Overworld, Nether and End, and each material can be smelted and crafted into ingots, gems, tools, weapons and armor. The materials draw on myths and legends, and their stats are tuned to sit alongside vanilla progression, so the added gear keeps close to the vanilla look and feel.

Each material gives access to a range of gear for combat, mining and building, letting a player pick equipment that matches how they prefer to play. Fantasy Metals is released under the MIT License and is open source, with its source code and issue tracker public. Files target 1.20.1 only, with 1.0.3 as the latest Forge file, published 2024-05-18. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

The author has archived the project and does not plan a Fabric port, a backport or updates for other versions, so the 1.20.1 Forge build is the final release line. Translation suggestions were accepted through the GitHub project page while the mod was active.

Key features

  1. New ores and metals

Four new metals and five gems generate in the Overworld, Nether and End, with ores placed in each dimension.

  2. Tools, weapons and armor

Each material yields its own set of tools, weapons and armor, with options for combat and mining.

  3. Vanilla-like balance

Stats and progression are tuned to fit alongside vanilla gear rather than overpower it.

  4. Matching textures

The new items use textures that look consistent with the vanilla item set.

How it compares

Full comparison

Gems & Things is also a Forge mod for 1.20.1 with the client and server environment, but it is not open source and is released under the MIT License. More Ores! is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only and covers 1.20.1 – 1.20.4, so it reaches more game versions. MrBoss's Fantasy Races focuses on races rather than materials, and is also Forge-only for 1.20.1 under the MIT License.
