Death Animations (Video Player)
by catman0221
Death Animations replaces the death moment with a custom video or frame sequence that the author chooses, and players see it on screen when their character dies.
What it does
Death Animations plays a video in place of the usual death screen. A file ending in .mp4 or .webm can be used in Direct Video mode, while Frames Mode plays a set of pre-generated PNG frames, which the author describes as smoother and more consistent in performance. FFmpeg is set up automatically on first launch, so decoding and frame creation need no separate install. The mod is published for Forge only, for Minecraft 1.20.1, and it runs on client and server.
Installation takes one launch of the game to finish the setup. Afterwards the options screen lets a player pick a video or frame set, and an optional green screen chroma key setting can remove a chosen background color from the footage. Server owners get their own options for the respawn flow and spectator behavior after death. The code is covered by All rights reserved, so the mod is not open source.
Key features
Direct video or frame sets
Death footage can be played straight from a .mp4 or .webm file, or from a set of pre-generated PNG frames.
Automatic FFmpeg setup
The mod installs the FFmpeg it needs for decoding video and creating frames during the first launch.
Green screen chroma key
An optional key setting removes a chosen background color from the animation, so footage shot on green can sit over the game.
Server-side respawn options
Server owners can adjust the respawn flow and spectator behavior that follow a death.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Players and server owners who want a personal death animation built from their own media. The mod suits anyone willing to supply a video or frame set and go through the setup steps once.
How it compares
Chroma Items can run on either side, and neither side needs it, under the Apache License 2.0. Color Screen [WB] runs on client and server and is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, so it is a different kind of visual effect with no video playback. ConditionalVideos is a client mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge that covers 1.20.1 – 26.2, while Death Animations targets 1.20.1 only.
