Cotton
by Daemon
Cotton is a Fabric crop mod that adds a cotton plant, its seeds, and cotton balls that can be turned into string.
What it does
A single new crop, cotton, is added to the vanilla farming system. Cotton seeds can come from breaking short grass, in the same way wheat seeds drop, and they are planted on farmland. The plant has eight growth stages and responds to bone meal the way wheat does. A mature plant is harvested for cotton balls and extra seeds, and Fortune raises the number of seeds collected. One cotton ball can be combined with one string in a shapeless recipe, and the mod gives cotton its own creative tab.
Cotton requires Fabric API and runs on Fabric 1.19.2 – 1.21.1, with 1.1.0+1.21.1 as the latest file for 1.21.1. It is also listed with Lightweight Config as an extra dependency. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. The source code is public, so the mod is open source.

What the author says
The farmer's way to get string: grow it. Cotton adds one simple crop to vanilla farming. Break grass to find cotton seeds, plant them on farmland, and harvest cotton balls you can turn into string. You won't have to fight spiders for wool, bows, fishing rods or leads anymore.
