Client Side Noteblocks

by DaCubeKing

Client Side Noteblocks cuts the server out of noteblock playback, so clicking a noteblock plays its sound on the player's own client without waiting for a round trip.

What it does

In vanilla, a click on a noteblock is sent to the server, which processes it and returns a packet telling the client to play the sound. Under a high ping that delay can reach hundreds of milliseconds, which makes timed songs hard to play. With the mod installed, the client detects the click on a noteblock and starts the sound right away.

The mod also drops duplicate sounds that arrive from the server after a local click, along with the sounds produced when a noteblock is broken. Once installed it works without any setup. It uses block data for noteblocks that vanilla does not send to the client in older releases, and that same data lets a texture pack show the note a block is currently set to.

Fabric API is required, and Mod Menu is optional. Cloth Config API is bundled inside the mod. The license is GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source code is public. Files exist for 1.16.2 – 26.3 with snapshot builds published, and the latest Fabric file is 2.14 for 26.3.

Key features

  1. Immediate noteblock sounds

Clicking a noteblock plays its note on the client at once instead of after the server replies.

  2. Duplicate sound filtering

Sounds the server sends for a noteblock click that the client already played are dropped.

  3. Break sound removal

Noteblocks broken in the world do not produce a break sound.

  4. Note display through texture packs

Block data for noteblocks lets a resource pack display the current note on the block.

  5. No setup

The changes apply as soon as the mod is installed, with nothing to configure.

Use cases

Timed noteblock songs

Players who build songs on noteblocks get a click response that matches the timing of the music, even on a connection with high latency.

Playing on servers

Players who join a server can install the mod to hear their own clicks without the delay, provided the server sends the block data it needs.

Who it’s for: Players who perform or compose songs with noteblocks, and players who want the clicks to respond without delay on a server that sends the block data.

Questions

Does Client Side Noteblocks need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and Mod Menu is optional.

Does the server need the mod?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Will it work on every server?

No. Some servers use a protocol hack that does not send the block data the mod needs. Hypixel does work.
