ChTR

by Cat4blep

ChTR splits chat into two modes on a NeoForge server: global messages reach everyone, while local messages reach only nearby players.

NeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT License1.21.1

What it does

A message that starts with the global chat prefix is delivered to all players on the server. An ordinary message is delivered only to players in the same dimension who stand within the local chat radius of the sender. Both values are set in the config, which defaults to a global prefix and a local radius of 100 blocks. The chat logic runs on the server side, so only the server needs the mod to route messages.

If no other player is within range, the sender receives a warning message. A separate option, warnIfNoListeners, controls whether that warning is shown at all. The mod supports formatted warning and chat messages, with placeholders for the player name, the message text, the current local chat radius, the current global chat prefix and the number of listeners. Formatting codes from 0 to 9, a to f, and l, o, n, m and k are supported in these messages.

Players connecting to a server that runs ChTR do not need to install anything, because the environment is server-side only. Files are published for NeoForge 1.21.1, with 1.0.0 as the latest version, released on 2026-04-23 under the MIT License. The mod is not open source.

Key features

  1. Global chat prefix

Messages that begin with a configurable prefix go to every player on the server.

  2. Local chat radius

Regular messages reach only players in the same dimension within the configured radius, 100 blocks by default.

  3. No-listener warning

A sender with no one in range gets a warning, which can be turned off with the warnIfNoListeners option.

  4. Formatted messages

Warning and chat messages accept placeholders for player name, message text, radius, prefix and listener count, plus formatting codes.

Questions

Does ChTR need to be installed on player clients?

No. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod. Only the server runs the chat logic.

How is the local chat radius set?

The radius is a config value that defaults to 100 blocks. Messages reach only players in the same dimension within that distance.

What happens when a local message has no listeners?

The sender gets a warning. The warnIfNoListeners option controls whether that warning is shown.

Which loaders does ChTR support?

Only NeoForge. Files exist for 1.21.1, and no other loader or game version is listed.
