Celeritas Leaf Culling is a Forge optimization mod for 1.12.2 that hides leaf faces the player cannot see, lowering the cost of drawing forests.

What it does

Celeritas Leaf Culling is a fork of SodiumLeafCulling, ported to 1.12.2 as part of the Celeritas project. Leaves with neighbors on every side are replaced by a solid block, and leaves that are surrounded only horizontally, on the north, south, east and west sides, are handled by a separate, more aggressive rule that ignores vertical neighbors. The result is a choice between speed and appearance rather than a single fixed behavior.

The mod is client-side only, so only the player's game needs it, and it requires the Cleanroom loader to run. Its settings sit alongside the Celeritas Extra 0.2.2 options, where the leaf culling entries should be disabled to avoid conflicts. The source code and issue tracker are public, and the code is available under the MIT License, so anyone can compile the jar themselves or grab the auto-built one. Files are published for Forge 1.12.2 only, with 1.0.1 as the latest, first published 2026-02-04 and last updated 2026-10-08.

Key features

  1. Horizontal culling mode

Leaves surrounded on the north, south, east and west sides are replaced, while vertical neighbors are ignored.

  2. Full six-sided culling

Leaves enclosed on all six faces are swapped for a solid block, giving the largest reduction in drawn faces.

  3. Visual options

The solid setting trades appearance for speed, while the Optifine-style smart option keeps results close to vanilla fancy leaves.

  4. Benchmark results

The author reports Twilight Forest frame rates rising from 540 to 740 with the hollow option at 32 render distance, and to 640 with the solid option.
