Chest DNA
by xsoras
Chest DNA stamps each item with a record of where it came from, such as a loot chest, a mob drop, a villager trade or a crafting table, and shows that record in the tooltip.
What it does
The origin is written at the moment an item is created or first enters the world. It covers chests opened in a village, dungeon, End City, ancient city or ominous vault, mob drops, loot tables, villager trades, fishing, crafting, smelting and mining. The record stores the biome or dimension, exact coordinates and the structure the item was found inside, and it stays with the item through its whole life.
The origin is held in a data component that other mods, commands and datapacks can read. Either side can run Chest DNA, and neither needs it. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 22 release versions, 1.7.10 – 26.3, and is released under the MIT License, but it is not open source.
Key features
Origin tooltip card
Hovering an item opens a pixel-art card beneath the normal tooltip, built one pixel at a time, with the origin name, glyph and rarity tier.
36 origin types
Each origin type has its own name, glyph and rarity tier, with frame colour set by rarity, covering 36 sources in total.
Origin details
The card can show the biome or dimension, coordinates, the structure the item was found inside and the chest or source it came from.
Tooltip sizing
The card sizes itself against the screen and wraps long values instead of growing wider or taller than the tooltip.

What the author says
Records where every item came from and shows it in the item's tooltip. Open a chest and you get loot with no story. Chest DNA fixes that: the moment an item is created it gets an origin stamped onto it, and that stamp travels with the item for the rest of its life.
