Carry The Nametag

by MaritheVillain

Carry The Nametag lets players keep a named farm animal's name when it is bred, so offspring inherit the nametag from the parents that share it.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.18 – 1.21.1

What it does

When two animals carrying the same nametag are bred, the baby receives that nametag automatically. If the two parents carry different names, the offspring receives no name and the names are not combined. A parent without a nametag passes nothing on, and breeding with a single named animal produces an unnamed baby. Animals with the same name keep it through generations, which makes it simpler to track a large herd.

The mod is server-side only, so only the server needs it installed and players join without installing anything. Single-player worlds need the mod on the client as well. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with the latest builds covering 1.18 – 1.21.1, and the project is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Inherited nametags

Two animals sharing a nametag produce a baby that carries the same nametag, with no manual renaming.

  2. Name-sharing breeding

Breeding animals with matching names gives the offspring the name applied to both parents.

  3. Mixed-name breeding

A baby from parents with different names receives no nametag, so mixed names do not carry over.

  4. Plain breeding

When one or neither parent has a nametag, breeding proceeds as in vanilla with no special result.

Use cases

Large livestock farms

Keeping track of animals across many generations becomes easier when each line keeps its name.

Who it’s for: Server owners and players who keep named livestock on survival or multiplayer worlds, where the mod keeps breeding lines labelled without renaming each new animal.

Questions

Does Carry The Nametag need to be installed on the client?

Not on a multiplayer server. The mod is server-side only, so players can join without it. Single-player worlds need the mod installed on the client.

Which loaders does Carry The Nametag support?

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest Forge file is 1.0.2 for 1.20.4, while the Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt files are 1.0.1.3 for 1.21.1.

What happens when two animals with different names breed?

The baby does not receive a nametag, because the names do not match. Only offspring of parents sharing one name keep that name.

What the author says

Carry the Nametag allows you to keep large farms of animals of named with less hassle. When you breed to animals, if they both have the same name, then the offspring of the two animals will also have the name applied to them. Think two Dinnerbone cows being bred, the new baby cow will also be a Dinnerbone cow now…
