Burnt Sun

by Alex1177

Burnt Sun is a NeoForge cursed mod that turns the sun into a damaging hazard, with a lethal laser, reduced health and a fall-damage reduction.

NeoForgeServer required, client optionalAll rights reserved1.21.4 – 1.21.9

What it does

A sun-based hazard is the mod's central mechanic. The Sun Extra Deadly Laser makes the sun's rays deal heavy harm to entities and players alike, and an entity or player in its path takes double damage, with the sun dealing 4 damage, or 2 hearts, per hit. Players lose 6 maximum health, so the margin for error is smaller than in vanilla survival, while a safe fall distance reduced by 1 block softens landings slightly.

The mod has a respawn safeguard: after a player spawns, placing an oak leaf block above their head keeps them from dying instantly to the sun's effect. The server must run Burnt Sun, while players may add it to their own game but do not need to. It is published for NeoForge only, across six release versions, 1.21.4 – 1.21.9, with the latest file 1.1.0 for 1.21.9, released 2025-10-06. It is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Sun Extra Deadly Laser

The sun emits a laser that deals heavy damage to entities and players in its path during normal play.

  2. Reduced maximum health

Players lose 6 maximum health, which makes the sun's damage more dangerous than vanilla survival.

  3. Double damage from the sun

Entities and players take twice the normal damage from the sun, with 4 damage, or 2 hearts, per hit.

  4. Oak leaf respawn protection

Placing an oak leaf block above a freshly spawned player's head stops them from dying instantly to the sun.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Burnt Sun suits survival players and server owners who want a sun-based challenge on NeoForge. Because it has to run on the server, server owners decide whether it is active, while players who join without it still play under the server's rules.

How it compares

Full comparison

Black sun is a NeoForge mod for 1.21.4 that is also client and server and under All rights reserved. Deadly Jump is another NeoForge mod for 1.21.4, also client and server and All rights reserved, focused on jumping rather than the sun. Deadly Weather is open source under the MIT License and runs on client and server across NeoForge builds for 1.21 – 1.21.10, so it covers a wider version range than Burnt Sun.
