Blasted Barrens
by davigj
Blasted Barrens adds a fantasy biome covered in laid ash debris, where a thick gray haze hangs over the land and ash particles drift above it.
What it does
The biome is largely desolate and is home almost exclusively to creepers, with an occasional singed animal. Only the vanilla creepers are tagged to spawn there naturally. A rare island variant, similar to mushroom islands, replaces some colder areas of the world.
Players visit the biome for its relative abundance of gunpowder. The haze is the main effect: mobs spawning inside it receive a tag that reduces their vision by about 80 percent, and creepers see through the haze automatically, which shrinks their detection radius within the biome. Installing Pehkui adds size and speed changes to some mobs on spawn, and Fog Looks Modern Now is recommended to render the haze effect. Blasted Barrens requires Blueprint, runs on client and server, and is published for Forge and NeoForge for 1.20.1, with the latest 1.0.8 file dated 2026-01-04. It is open source under the MIT License.
Key features
Ash-covered biome
Laid ash debris and a persistent gray haze with drifting ash particles define the look of the biome.
Reduced mob vision
Mobs spawning in the barrens are tagged so their vision is cut by about 80 percent, with a chance to grow larger and move slower when Pehkui is present.
Rare island variant
An island form of the biome replaces some colder areas, similar in spirit to mushroom islands.
Optional compatibility

Use cases
Who it’s for: The mod suits players and server owners who want a desolate, hazy biome with creeper-only spawns. Since it runs on both sides, a server and every player need it installed.
How it compares
Biome2 is server-side only, licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and published for 1.20.1 – 1.21.4, so players can join without installing it. Enditions is also server-side only and is licensed as All rights reserved, with files for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1. TFC Barrens runs on client and server and is published for 1.20.1 under the BSD 2-Clause License, which makes it a closer match on environment than the other two.
