BetterNameTags

by Meowyy

BetterNameTags replaces the vanilla player name tag with a 3D overlay that stays visible, showing the player name, health and held or worn items.

FabricClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

Name tags are drawn in world space and turned toward the camera, so they stay readable at a distance. Each one can show the player's health with a color that moves from green through yellow to red, along with the armor and held items the player carries. Item icons are rendered directly in 3D space rather than as flat sprites.

The mod is client-side only, so it needs no installation on the server and players can join a server that does not run it. Fabric API is required. Files are published for Fabric alone, covering the game versions 1.21.1 – 26.1.2, with 1.0.0 for 26.1.2 as the latest file. The code is not open source, and the author holds all rights.

Key features

  1. Always-visible name tags

Player names and health stay visible above nearby players in the world, replacing the vanilla name tag rendering.

  2. Health color indication

The health value is colored green, yellow or red depending on how much health the player has left.

  3. Equipment display

Armor pieces and held items appear with the name tag, so nearby players can see what another player carries.

  4. Customizable 3D rendering

Name tags use camera billboarding and 3D item icons, with a clean layout that can be adjusted in the settings.

Questions

Does BetterNameTags need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is listed as a required dependency and must be installed next to BetterNameTags on Fabric.

Does the server need BetterNameTags?

No. The mod is client-side only, so a server can run without it and players still see the overlay on their own client.

Which game versions are supported?

Files cover 1.21.1 – 26.1.2, including 1.21.2 – 1.21.11 and 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2, across 14 release versions.

Can the display be changed?

The author text describes a customizable layout for the 3D name tags, so the appearance can be adjusted in the mod settings.
