Better hidden chat
by AndyRusso
Better hidden chat lets players hide the chat window while still typing messages and running commands, and it is configured through hidechat subcommands.
What it does
Chat stays out of sight while the player keeps sending messages and running commands. Incoming messages can appear as an overlay instead of the usual chat panel, and the overlay is the default setting. The notification style is adjustable: a player can route it either to the chat window as a regular message or to the on-screen overlay, and showing the notification in chat is a separate switch that can be enabled or disabled.
Another option decides whether the typing indicator shows while chat is hidden. A separate setting keeps chat hidden the next time the game is opened, so a player who closed it with chat hidden starts the next session that way too. Off is the default for that setting. All options are changed with the hidechat subcommands. Better hidden chat is open source under the MIT License and requires Fabric API. Files are published for Fabric and Quilt across 24 release versions, 1.19 – 1.21.11, with 1.2.0 for 1.21.11 as the latest build.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Players who want chat out of the way on a client. The mod changes nothing on a server, so servers do not need to run it.
How it compares
Login Chat is a Fabric and Quilt client mod released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and it is open source, for 1.19.2 – 1.21.8. TeaBridge is open source under the MIT License, but it is server-side only and covers 1.19.2 – 1.21.1, so players join without it. Chat Binds is also open source and client-side only, under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, for 1.20 – 1.21.10.
