Better Crafting Recipes

by TheBlueAllay

Better Crafting Recipes gates ten vanilla items behind progression requirements, so shulker boxes, tridents and totems can be crafted once a player meets a set goal.

What it does

Each recipe in the mod is tied to a specific requirement: killing a number of Blazes for a shulker box, defeating Drowned for a trident, or taming a horse for a saddle. The mod was built around items whose vanilla acquisition is either very random, locked to a rare structure, or unusually tedious for how often they are used. Recipes keep normal progression in place instead of bypassing it.

The mod runs in singleplayer and on dedicated servers, and Fabric API is required on either loader. Only the server needs the mod for the recipe gates to apply, while a client installation adds an in-game screen with recipe progress. Files are published for Fabric and NeoForge, covering game versions 1.20 – 26.2, under All rights reserved; the code is not open source.

Key features

  1. Ten gated recipes

Each craftable item has its own requirement, such as a kill count or a tame, rather than a free recipe.

  2. Shared horse taming

Diamond horse armor uses the same taming progress as the saddle, so one tamed horse counts for both.

  3. Wet sponge from Elder Guardians

Wet sponge crafting requires defeating six Elder Guardians, mirroring how the item is found in Ocean Monuments.

  4. Recipe progress screen

With the mod on the client, players can open a screen that lists recipe progress and requirements.

Questions

Does Better Crafting Recipes need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and it must be installed alongside the mod on Fabric.

Does a dedicated server need the mod for the recipe gates?

Yes, the server must run the mod for the gates to apply. Players do not need it to craft the gated items once they meet the requirement.

Do the saddle recipes still matter on newer builds?

Vanilla Minecraft now has its own saddle recipe on newer builds, so the mod's version is kept for consistency across the supported range.

What the author says

This is not a "make everything craftable" mod. Each recipe was chosen because the vanilla acquisition path is either extremely RNG-heavy (tridents), loot-locked to a rare structure (crying obsidian, spore blossoms), or otherwise disproportionately frustrating relative to how common the item is used — and each one is…
