Better Chunk Borders

by L3_N0X

Better Chunk Borders changes how the chunk debug renderer draws chunk edges on the client, with custom colors, grid spacing and gradient walls.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.11 – 26.3

What it does

The mod replaces the vanilla chunk border renderer, so borders are still toggled with F3 + G. Its default look is restyled, and a set of presets gives a starting configuration that players can then tune. Grid spacing can be set to 4, 8 or 16 chunk increments, and the internal vertical grid lines can be made more or less frequent within that spacing.

Border colors, thickness and corner line colors can be customized, and semi-transparent boundary walls can fade between a chosen bottom and top color. Gradients can track the height of the ground beneath the chunk, including sloped terrain and optional height smoothing, or they can track the player's own height instead. Horizontal grid lines can be added, optionally tracking the player. Options are edited in game through Mod Menu, with the settings screen built on YetAnotherConfigLib.

Better Chunk Borders is client-side only, so only the client needs it and a server can run without it. It requires Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL), and Mod Menu is optional. The mod is published for Fabric only, with files covering 1.21.11 – 26.3. It is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Chunk grid spacing

Grid spacing is set in chunk increments of 4, 8 or 16, and the vertical grid lines inside each spacing can be made denser or sparser.

  2. Border colors and walls

Colors, thickness and corner line colors are set per border, and boundary walls can fade between a bottom and a top color.

  3. Terrain and player height

Gradients can adapt to the terrain surface height with smoothing, or be made relative to the player's height.

  4. Horizontal grid lines

Custom horizontal lines can be added, and they can optionally follow the player's position.
