Better Balanced Shields

by ZephiaLux

Better Balanced Shields changes how Minecraft shields absorb and reflect damage, with settings for arrows, splash potions and melee hits.

ForgeClient and serverCustom license1.12 – 1.20.4

What it does

Shields can be tuned in several ways. A server or single-player config controls how much melee damage a raised shield absorbs, which is set to 25 percent by default, and how much it reflects back to the attacker, which is 0 percent by default. Arrows, splash potions and dragon breath can each be deflected or blocked separately, and buff or debuff effects from potions can be ignored or handled as the settings define.

The mod is a Forge mod for Minecraft 1.20.4, built for the 1.12 – 1.20.4 range with files covering seven release versions. It is listed under the game mechanics category and runs on client and server, so both the server and every player need it. The source code and issue tracker are public, but the license is custom and the project is not open source.

Key features

  1. Melee damage absorption

A raised shield absorbs only a configured share of melee damage, 25 percent by default.

  2. Melee damage reflection

The share of melee damage returned to the attacker is configurable, and it is 0 percent by default.

  3. Projectile and potion handling

Arrows, splash potions and their buff or debuff effects can be deflected or ignored through separate settings.

  4. Dragon breath shield

Dragon breath can be stopped by a shield, and that behavior can be switched on or off in the config.

Use cases

Tuning combat on a server

Server owners can change shield strength so melee fights, ranged fights and potion use fit the balance they want.

Single-player difficulty

A player running the game alone can adjust shields to make defense easier or harder without changing other mechanics.

Who it’s for: Server owners and players who want shields to behave differently from vanilla, and who are comfortable editing a config file.
