Apathy

by quat

Apathy controls whether mobs attack players, through a JSON rule system that sets aggression by world difficulty, mob type tags and other conditions.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.16.5 – 1.21.1

What it does

Apathy can turn off mob aggression entirely, or limit it to the cases a rule set defines. Rules can depend on the current world difficulty, on mob type tags, and on the other conditions the rule format supports, so a server can build exactly the scenario it wants. Rules can also integrate with vanilla scoreboard objectives, advancements, locations and biomes.

The mod can disable entities attacking players, make the Ender Dragon and Wither fights less aggressive, and let players opt in or opt out of player-versus-environment scenarios by adding them to player sets. It is a port and rewrite of the earlier Apathetic Mobs mod, and the author describes it as considerably more configurable.

Apathy runs on the server alone, so players join without installing anything. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 11 release versions, 1.16.5 – 1.21.1. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only. Berk Origins requires it.

Use cases

Peaceful survival servers

A server owner can disable hostile attacks on players while keeping mobs present in the world.

Custom PvE events

Scoreboard objectives and advancements can switch mob aggression on for a chosen group of players.

Who it’s for: Server owners who want to set mob behavior with fine control, and modpack authors who need aggression rules tied to vanilla progress or locations. Players do not need to install the mod.

Questions

Does Apathy need to be installed on players' clients?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own.

Which loaders does Apathy support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest Quilt file is for 1.20.1, while Fabric and NeoForge files target 1.21.1.

Which mod requires Apathy?

Berk Origins requires it, so Apathy must be present on a server that runs that mod.

What the author says

Apathy is an overconfigurable port/rewrite of Apathetic Mobs. It allows you to control mob aggressiveness - whether mobs attack players. You can: disable aggression entirely, control aggression with a rule system, where mob aggressiveness is dependent on things such as the current world difficulty or the mob's type…
