Am I Lagging?

by SSH

Am I Lagging? is a Fabric client mod that puts a small lag indicator on screen, built from ping jitter, CPU load, JVM heap usage, Wi-Fi signal strength and a server TPS estimate.

FabricClient-side onlyCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial 4.01.21.10 – 1.21.11

What it does

The indicator is a bar display: four green bars mean a good signal with little lag, three amber bars mean an acceptable signal, two orange bars mean slightly laggy, and a single bar in dark orange or red means laggy. The bar count is driven by whichever metric is currently the main cause of the lag, and a separate indicator shows which metric that is.

Five metrics feed the display: ping jitter, CPU load, the memory the JVM has allocated to Minecraft, Wi-Fi signal strength where it is available, and an estimate of server TPS. Players who want more detail can open the mod menu and switch to a real-time line graph, which stays less intrusive than a full debug screen. The mod runs on the client alone, so servers need nothing installed, and it is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial 4.0 license, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Four-level bar indicator

Bars change from four green to a single red bar as the connection and performance worsen, giving a glance-level reading.

  2. Main-cause indicator

A separate indicator names the metric currently responsible for the lag, so players know whether to look at ping or frame rate.

  3. Tracked metrics

Ping jitter, CPU load, JVM heap usage, Wi-Fi signal strength and server TPS estimate are all sampled while the game runs.

  4. Real-time line graph

The mod menu offers a line graph of the same readings for a more detailed view of lag over time.

Use cases

Spotting network lag

Jitter and signal readings help separate a connection problem from a slow machine during online play.

Watching a heavy world

CPU and heap readings show when the game itself is struggling, such as during large builds or big farms.

Who it’s for: Players on Fabric who want a compact lag readout on screen while playing single-player or multiplayer, without a full debug overlay. The mod has been tested on macOS; its behavior on Windows is not confirmed.

Questions

Does Am I Lagging? need to be installed on the server?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it.

Which Minecraft versions does Am I Lagging? support?

The latest Fabric file, 1.1.0, is built for 1.21.11. Files also exist for 1.21.10, so the supported range is 1.21.10 – 1.21.11.

Can the indicator show more detail than the bars?

Yes. The mod menu includes a real-time line graph of the tracked readings, which shows lag over time instead of a single bar count.

What the author says

This is a simple mod that shows if you are lagging or not. I looked to see if a mod like this existed and I found a few that only mesure ping but I wanted to see everything. This tracks: - FPS - Ping - Ping jitter - CPU Load - JVM heap usage (minecrafts allocated memory usage) - Wifi Signal Strength (when possible) …
