Aileron

by Lodestar

With Aileron installed, Elytra flight gains campfire launches, stored boosts, altitude-based glide and enchantments, all changing how far a player can travel.

What it does

Aileron changes Elytra so that travel needs infrastructure. Fireworks no longer give speed boosts and leave only a cosmetic trail instead. Crouching on a campfire while wearing an Elytra launches the player straight up when released, and flying over a campfire adds upward lift. The camera tilts during fast turns.

Campfire stacking makes smoke rise higher when more campfires sit next to the source. Two enchantments are added: one lets a player store boosts while crouched on campfires and spend them with the jump key in flight, capped at one stored boost per level up to 3, and the other reduces horizontal drag above the cloud layer so gliding lasts longer. Both are treasure enchantments and each is incompatible with the other's counterpart from the Lodestar set. The mod is aimed at multiplayer play and remains usable in single-player. Every design choice is configurable.

Aileron requires no other mod. It runs on the client and the server, so both sides need it. Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across six game versions, 1.18.2 – 1.21.1, and it is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, which makes it open source.

Key features

  1. Campfire launch

Crouching on a lit campfire wearing an Elytra and releasing after one second launches the player upward.

  2. Campfire lift

Flying over a campfire boosts the player upward while the Elytra is open.

  3. Stored boosts

Boosts can be stored while crouched on campfires and used with the jump key during flight.

  4. Glide enchantment

Reduces horizontal drag at altitude above the clouds, allowing longer and faster gliding.

Use cases

Multiplayer travel

Servers where distance matters can keep Elytra flight tied to built routes and campfire hubs.

Who it’s for: Players and server owners who want Elytra flight to rely on routes, hubs and campfires rather than fireworks alone.

What the author says

Infrastructure should always beat possessing one endgame item. Aileron is an attempt to bring Elytra in line with other transport systems in Minecraft while expanding on their capabilities. We want to make them much more fun and balanced by introducing new mechanics and enchantments - mostly geared towards…
