Actually Useful Smithing Table lets a smithing table upgrade tools and armor, so the table does more than apply armor trims.

What it does

Vanilla smithing tables mostly serve armor trims. This mod gives the table a wider job: tools can be upgraded at it by supplying the matching blocks, such as wood to netherite. Cobblestone blocks turn a wooden pickaxe into a cobblestone pickaxe, and obsidian can be applied to make tools stronger. Client and server both need it, and it is published for Forge and NeoForge across 22 release versions, 1.16.5 – 26.1.2, under the CC0 1.0 Universal license.

  1. Tool upgrades at the table

    A tool moves up a material tier when the matching block is placed in the smithing table with it.

  2. Cobblestone tool tier

    A wooden pickaxe becomes a cobblestone pickaxe when cobblestone is supplied, and the same pattern applies to other tools.

  3. Obsidian reinforcement

    Obsidian can be applied to tools to make them stronger, in the style of vanilla tool materials.

This mod allows you to upgrade tools and armor in a smithing table by supplying the appropriate blocks. Adding in a cobblestone block with a wooden pickaxe will get you a cobblestone pickaxe, etc. You can also apply obsidian to tools to make them stronger, like a vanilla themed "tinkers construct" style upgrade system.
