WindowPlayerHead

by typicalsmc

WindowPlayerHead changes the Minecraft window icon to show the player's own head, fetched by username and set through GLFW or SDL3 on the client.

FabricClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21 – 26.3

What it does

On launch the mod sets the window icon to the player's head texture, taken from Minotar. Textures are stored in the cache folder inside .minecraft, under windowplayerhead, so later launches can reuse them. Fetching happens in the background, so it does not hold up world loading.

Because the change happens in the client's window handling, the mod is a client mod only: servers run without it and players join without installing anything. It targets the Fabric loader, with 17 release versions covered, and the latest Fabric file is 1.2 for 26.3. The code is published openly, but the mod is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Player head window icon

The window icon is replaced with the head texture of the account that is playing.

  2. Remote head lookup

The texture is fetched from Minotar by username, so no skin file has to be supplied by hand.

  3. Local texture cache

Fetched heads are saved in a windowplayerhead folder inside the game's cache directory for reuse.

  4. Background fetching

Fetching happens in the background, so world loading is not delayed by the request.

Use cases

Singleplayer and multiplayer

Players who join a server or open a singleplayer world see their own head in the window icon, which helps tell apart several game windows in the taskbar.

Who it’s for: Players who run several Minecraft windows and want each one to be recognizable, and streamers who show their own head in the taskbar.
