Window to Reality

by nml

Window to Reality changes the Minecraft game window so that it can show transparency, which video makers and map makers use for chromakey work.

FabricClient and serverApache License 2.0Open source26.1 – 26.2

What it does

The mod modifies the game window so it supports transparency, and it adds four utility blocks that differ in whether they can be broken and whether players can pass through them. Their behavior is listed in the features below. The mod runs on the client and on the server, so both sides need it, and Fabric API is an optional dependency that the mod can use.

The project is open source under the Apache License 2.0, and its source code and issue tracker are public. It is published for Fabric only, in four release versions 26.1 – 26.2, with 26.2 being the newest. The latest file, 0.2+26.2 for 26.2, was released on 2026-06-11 on the beta channel, and snapshot builds are published as well. The first release came out on 2026-05-06.

Active development targets the latest version, and older versions receive updates that community pull requests contribute. Additional content and a NeoForge version are planned but not yet released.

Key features

  1. Transparent game window

The Minecraft window itself supports transparency, which lets the game be composited over other content.

  2. Breakable solid block

One of the four utility blocks is solid and can be broken by the player.

  3. Unbreakable solid block

A solid block that cannot be broken is included, alongside the breakable versions.

  4. Cutout and passthrough blocks

Cutout barrier, cutout window, cutout void and breakable or unbreakable passthrough blocks cover the remaining combinations.

Use cases

Chromakey recording

Video creators can use the transparent window and the cutout blocks to build chromakey setups for their footage.

Map making

Map makers can place the utility blocks to mark areas that are solid, passable or hidden from view.

Who it’s for: The mod suits video creators who need a transparent game window and map makers who want blocks with mixed collision and break rules. Server owners who run it need to install it on the server and on every player's client.

Questions

Does Window to Reality need Fabric API?

No. Fabric API is listed as an optional dependency, so the mod runs without it.

Does the mod have to be installed on the server?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which versions does Window to Reality support?

Files exist for 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2 and 26.2, with snapshot builds also published. A NeoForge version is planned but not released yet.
