Wayland Fix

by stackdoubleflow

Wayland Fix lets Minecraft run natively under Wayland on Linux instead of through the XWayland compatibility layer.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.0 – 1.21

What it does

Minecraft normally runs under XWayland on Wayland desktops, which can make the window look blurry and leave per-monitor HiDPI scaling unavailable. The mod switches the game to a native Wayland window, so the display is handled by the compositor directly. It is written for Fabric and used on the client only, so players install it and servers do not need it.

The mod requires a Wayland-supported system and a GLFW build with Wayland support, and a specific JVM flag has to be set to enable the native path. The author wrote it after using the Sway window manager with a HiDPI display, and notes that on Arch Linux a proper GLFW package must be installed first. A community patch to GLFW is an alternative route the author would rather avoid.

The code is open source under the MIT License, and the source and issue tracker are public. Files are published for Fabric only, with 1.1 as the latest file for 1.21, last updated 2024-06-18 and first released 2023-12-03. Build coverage spans 87 release versions, 1.0 – 1.21.

Key features

  1. Native Wayland window

The game window is created through Wayland instead of being routed through XWayland.

  2. Per-monitor HiDPI scaling

Scaling follows each monitor's density, which the XWayland path does not provide.

  3. Sharp text on Wayland

Windows no longer look blurry, because the game renders at the compositor's native resolution.

  4. Requires a GLFW build

A Wayland-capable GLFW library must be present, and a JVM flag enables the native path.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Linux players running a Wayland session who notice blurry scaling under XWayland. It is a client mod and is not needed on servers.

How it compares

WayGL is also client-side only and open source under the MIT License, but it targets Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.17 – 26.1.2, so it covers loaders this mod does not. waylandcraft is client-side only, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and published for 26.1.2 only. BlazeSDL is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, client-side only, for Fabric and NeoForge across 26.1 – 26.2.

Questions

Does Wayland Fix need Fabric API?

No required dependency is listed for Fabric. Check the file's dependency list for any library it needs.

Do servers need Wayland Fix installed?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

What does a Wayland system need to run the mod?

A Wayland-supported system and a GLFW build with Wayland support are required, plus the JVM flag the author describes. On Arch Linux the proper GLFW package must be installed first.
