Void Fog

by Sollace

Void Fog restores the dark fog that surrounds the player in older versions of the game, with a few changes to how it moves and how it reacts to light.

FabricQuiltClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.3 – 26.3

What it does

The mod brings back the void fog seen in earlier Minecraft releases, and adds some refinements on top of it. The fog's encroach and retreat animation has been smoothed, so its movement looks less abrupt. Fog is pushed back in brightly lit areas, such as around torches, so players can see clearly where light is present.

The mod is a port and rewrite of Tamaized's Void Fog for Fabric, carried to later Minecraft releases. It is client-side only, so only the client needs it; servers and other players do not. It requires Fabric API on every loader it targets. Kirin is bundled inside the mod, so nothing extra needs to be installed for it. Void Fog is open source under the MIT License, and its files are published for Fabric and Quilt across 33 release versions, 1.16.3 – 26.3, with snapshot builds included.

Key features

  1. Smoothed fog animation

The encroach and retreat movement of the fog is smoothed compared with the original version.

  2. Light pushes the fog back

Standing in brightly lit areas, such as near torches, pushes the fog off so the surrounding space is visible.

  3. Particle density option

A setting lets players configure how dense the fog particles appear.

  4. Secret big boi mode

A hidden mode is included as an easter egg, activated through the mod's options.

Use cases

Classic atmosphere

Players who want the look of the earlier void fog in their worlds can enable the mod for a darker, more closed-in feel.

Who it’s for: Players who want the older void fog look on a single-player or multiplayer client, and anyone who prefers a smoother fog animation with lighting that clears it.

What the author says

This is an update and port/rewrite of Tamaized's Void Fog for Fabric and Minecraft 1.14 (and beyond). Just like the original, this mod brings back the void fog of versions prior to Minecraft 1.8, but with some added improvements to make it just that much more fun.
