Valley
by TerraForged
Valley is a world-generation mod that replaces vanilla rivers with rivers that start inland and meander across the terrain.
What it does
Valley changes how rivers, continents and terrain are generated in a new world. Rivers begin inland and wind in a more natural shape, and the terrain they cross forms valleys and ridgelines that read as one landscape. The rivers lead somewhere rather than stopping at arbitrary points, which gives travel and exploration a different shape than the default world.
The mod is meant to sit alongside other world-generation and biome mods and datapacks, such as Terralith and Biomes O Plenty, instead of replacing them. Settings for rivers and continents are exposed, presets can be distributed to override Valley's defaults, and GUI enhancements let a player preview changes before creating a world.
Valley requires Fabric API. The server needs the mod, and clients need it too in order to connect to a server that runs it, though the client side is treated as optional. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and the latest build targets 1.21.10. All rights reserved applies to the mod, which is not open source.
Key features
Inland river generation
Rivers start inland and meander through the landscape instead of following the vanilla river placement.
Valleys and ridgelines
Terrain generation forms valleys and ridgelines, with mountain chains that shape where rivers run.
Configurable rivers and continents
River and continent settings are exposed, and presets can be shared to override Valley's defaults.
Preview before creating a world

How it compares
Abridged is a server-side only mod, open source under the MIT License and published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 26.2, so players can join without installing it. Large Rivers in Large Biomes requires the server and is not open source under the MIT License, with files for 1.21.6 – 1.21.11. Terrano is the other option that runs on both client and server, but it covers only 1.21.1 and is not open source.
