Thirst Was Taken

by ghen-git

Players who keep a thirst meter in their survival world can use Thirst Was Taken, a Forge and NeoForge mod that adds a hydration mechanic with purified and dirty water.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.18.2 – 1.21.1

What it does

Drinking water that has not been purified can make a player sick, or poisoned, depending on its purity level. Water is purified on a campfire, which raises it by one unit, or in a furnace, which raises it by two, so dirty water can be brought to an acceptable level. The rate at which hydration drops depends on the biome: hot or dry biomes deplete it faster than cold or wet ones, which makes wet biomes a better place to build a base. When the Cold Sweat mod is present, the system uses its more precise temperature values.

The mod works on client and server, so the server and every player need it. It is published for Forge and NeoForge across eight game versions, and the code is open source under the MIT License. Water Canteens, Thirst Was No More and Thirst Was Tweaked all require it. Compatibility with Create and Farmer's Delight is built in, and the Sand Filter block appears only when Create is installed.

Key features

  1. Purification levels

Water moves through purity levels when placed on a campfire or in a furnace, and each level changes what drinking it does.

  2. Biome-based thirst

Hydration depletes faster in hot or dry biomes and slower in cold or wet ones, so location affects how often a player must drink.

  3. Drinks in structure chests

Drinks of several kinds can be found in the chests of generated structures, giving early access to hydration sources.

  4. Sand Filter with Create

With Create installed, a Sand Filter purifies water that pipes feed into it, and it has a Ponder scene.

  5. Piglin trades

Piglins can trade Purified Water to players, adding another route to clean drinking water.

What the author says

Thirst was Taken is a simple mod that adds a thirst mechanic to the game, but that fits well in modpacks (especially aesthetics-oriented ones) by adding diverse features and compatibility with a lot of often-used mods. If you drink non-purified water, depending on the purity level, you will have a chance to get sick…
