The Forgotten Portal
by Bahanos
The Forgotten Portal lets players light a Nether portal in the Ancient City, using the frame Mojang already placed deep under the world.
What it does
The Ancient City frame, reinforced deepslate in the right shape and size, has sat in every world since 1.19 without ever being lit. This mod makes it work as the only way into the Nether from that structure. Players descend, survive the guards, and light the frame themselves, after which it stays lit. Because the frame cannot be crafted or dropped, the gate cannot be cheated, and a built or broken frame has no effect on the link.
Each portal links to the Ancient City nearest to it, so cities become stations on a network between the Overworld and the Nether. Digging a portal near the surface lets a player return to the city closest to where they want to go. Obsidian portals built in the Overworld are refused by the mod, and portals already standing keep working until they are taken down in the normal way. The mod is published for Fabric only, for 26.2 with a 1.0.0+26.2 file dated 2026-08-17, and it runs on the server alone.
Key features
Ancient City portal frame
The existing structure deep in the Ancient City becomes the only frame that lights a Nether portal.
Cities as a network
Each lit portal connects to the nearest Ancient City, linking cities across the map.
Unbreakable frame material
The frame material cannot be obtained or dropped, even with Silk Touch, and it survives explosions.
Obsidian portals refused
Obsidian portals built in the Overworld no longer open, so the Ancient City route is the only path.

Use cases
Map and adventure play
Cities act as fixed stations on a shared map, so a world can be travelled along a set route.
Who it’s for: Players who want the Ancient City structure to serve a purpose, and server owners who want portal travel limited to one route.
How it compares
Nether Coords is a client-side only Fabric mod with files for 1.19 – 26.2, under All rights reserved, and it changes nothing on the server. Better Nether Portals runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20.1 – 26.3, needs both client and server, and is not open source. Disable Portals is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only and covers 1.16.5 – 1.21.11, as a server-side only mod.

What the author says
Deep under the world, in the heart of every ancient city, stands a frame of reinforced deepslate. It is the right shape. It is the right size. It has been sitting there since 1.19, and it has never done anything. This mod lights it, and makes it the only door.
