Dimension Leak Fix

by Bahanos

Dimension Leak Fix is a Fabric client mod that clears memory retained by the previous world after the player changes dimension.

FabricClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.18.2 – 26.2

What it does

When the client creates a new world on a dimension change, several mods can keep references to the old one, and its data stays in memory. The mod detects dimension transitions automatically and breaks those retention chains, which the author reports recovers roughly 2 to 4 GB per transition. Cleanup runs in two phases: the first detaches world references, entity sets, cached block entities and renderer caches, and a second phase about three seconds later releases chunk storage and remaining slots so the renderer is not disturbed mid-transition.

The mod only applies fixes that match the mods actually installed, so it changes nothing when none of the affected mods are present. It is client-side only, so servers and other players do not need it. Files exist for Fabric alone, with the latest build 1.0.2+26.2 for 26.2, released on 2026-08-21. The code is all rights reserved and the mod is not open source.

Key features

  1. Automatic transition cleanup

Dimension changes between the Overworld, Nether and End are detected without any player action, and the old world is released.

  2. Two-phase release

Cleanup is split into a first pass on world references and entity sets, and a delayed second pass on chunk storage to avoid renderer interference.

  3. Conditional fixes

Only the fixes relevant to installed mods are applied, so the mod leaves unrelated setups untouched.

  4. Logged operations

Each transition writes a log of what was detached, cleared and released, which helps when checking whether the cleanup ran.

What the author says

Every time you travel between the Overworld, Nether, and End, your client creates a new ClientWorld. The old world should be garbage-collected, but several popular mods accidentally hold references to it - causing it to stay in memory forever. After just a few dimension changes, this can eat 4-8 GB of RAM, leading to…
