Thaumcraft: Return of the Ancients is a Forge addon for Thaumcraft 6 that rebuilds the ancient world, a dimension reached through portals found in the world.
What it does
The addon adds eight portals to the world. Each one leads into the ancient world, which the author has redesigned both visually and in gameplay. Taint biomes generate around the portals, so players reaching the ancient world meet the Thaumcraft corruption theme from the start.
The mod uses a custom color shader lighting engine for the ancient world. It also overrides vanilla biome generation, which can cause compatibility issues with other mods that change biomes. The author describes the project as an early alpha, with many mechanics still under development and balance changes and bugs expected.
Installation needs Forge for 1.12.2 and Thaumcraft 6. Installation covers the server and each player's game. The latest file is 2.0.9-alpha for 1.12.2, published 2026-07-08 on the alpha channel, and the code is released under the MIT License as open source.
