Tectonic Layers

by Pepitaaf

Tectonic Layers stacks the Nether below the Overworld and the End above it, so travel between them happens through vertical portals inside one continuous world.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT License1.21.1

What it does

Instead of separate dimensions, the mod builds a single layered world. The Nether lies under the surface, the Overworld occupies the middle band, and the End hangs high above it. Nether and End biomes, terrain, fog, sky and lighting behave as they do in their own dimensions while sharing the stacked Overworld, and portals route players vertically between the layers.

The mod is a beta world generation mod. Its layered terrain comes from a custom layered chunk generator, and it depends on Tectonic Lithostitched as its world generation foundation and on Amplified Nether, which supplies the real Nether source terrain. Both must be installed. Existing worlds keep chunks that were already generated, so a new world gives the most consistent results; backing up a world before installing or updating is advised.

Tectonic Layers is published for NeoForge 1.21.1 only and runs on the client and server. The MIT License covers it, but the project is not open source. Other biome, structure and Nether or End mods may work with it, but compatibility is still experimental and the author intends testing to gather compatibility reports.

Key features

  1. Vertical layers

The Nether lies below the Overworld and the End lies above it, forming one stacked world.

  2. Layered terrain generation

A custom layered chunk generator produces the stacked terrain and converts chunks to the new layout.

  3. Nether and End biomes

Biome heights, fog, sky and lighting are adjusted so Nether and End areas read correctly inside the Overworld.

  4. Portal routing

Vertical portals move players between the Nether, Overworld and End without separate dimensions.

  5. End dragon support

A stacked End island holds the End dragon fight within the layered world.

How it compares

Full comparison

Nether Ores is server-side only, not open source, and published for NeoForge 1.21.5, a different version from Tectonic Layers. Aeroworld is server-side only and MIT licensed for NeoForge 1.21.1, so only the server needs it. Sky World is also published for NeoForge 1.21.1, but the server requires it while clients may leave it out, under All rights reserved.

Questions

Which dependencies does Tectonic Layers need?

Tectonic Lithostitched and Amplified Nether are required. Both must be installed alongside Tectonic Layers on NeoForge 1.21.1.

Does the server need Tectonic Layers?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

Can Tectonic Layers be added to an existing world?

Existing worlds keep chunks already generated, so they may not match the stacked layout. A new world gives the most consistent results, and a backup should be made first.

What the author says

Tectonic Layers turns the Overworld into a vertically stacked world: the Nether exists deep below the surface, the normal Overworld stays in the middle, and the End exists high above the world. Instead of using separate dimensions for everything, the mod builds a continuous layered world where you can travel…
