Taste Fatigue

by xxxyn

Taste Fatigue makes players who eat the same food repeatedly receive less from it, encouraging them to rely on a wider selection of staple foods.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

Taste Fatigue tracks how many times each food type has been eaten by a player, and that count drops by one every 10 in-game minutes. Depending on the current count, configurable effects are applied, such as a change to eating speed, a reduction in health restoration, and adjustments to hunger and saturation. Eating a food with a high count shows a custom message in the action bar, so the player can see when a food has become less useful.

The mod is aimed at survival play and at modpacks where food matters. Its stated purpose is to make new foods more than one-off novelties, and to push players toward mass-producing staple foods instead of relying on a single cost-effective option. Taste Fatigue is client and server, so both the server and every player need it, and it is released under the MIT License as open source for Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.

Key features

  1. Per-player eating count

Each player's consumption is counted separately for each food type, so one player's habits do not affect another's.

  2. Decaying fatigue

The count for a food type drops by one every 10 in-game minutes, so a food regains its effect over time.

  3. Configurable effects

Eating speed, health restoration, hunger and saturation can each be adjusted through configuration as the count rises.

  4. Action bar feedback

A custom message appears in the action bar when a player eats a food whose count is high, showing the effect of repetition.

What the author says

Video games can only provide audiovisual sensory stimulation, not taste (at least for now). As a result, a large number of food items end up as mere milestones, novelties, or decorations. Taste Fatigue aims to encourage players to mass-produce a variety of staple foods, rather than relying solely on a single…
