Spawn Egg BYID Redirect

by Jackbusters

Spawn Egg BYID Redirect is a library for developers who want several spawn eggs that spawn the same entity type with different variants, and it keeps each egg's color.

FabricForgeQuiltClient and serverAll rights reserved1.15 – 1.21

What it does

Minecraft normally gives one spawn egg per entity type, and a variant added to an existing type loses its color on the egg. The mod changes how spawn egg IDs are assigned so each variant can have its own egg. Players who install the mod on a client and server get the extra eggs and the correct colors without further setup.

The mod is aimed at mod authors and modpack builders. Its source code and issue tracker are public. Other mods can build on it, and two catalog mods already require it: Cat Variant Eggs and Wolf Variant Eggs.

Installation needs the same mod on both client and server. It is published for Fabric, Forge and Quilt across 27 release versions, 1.15 – 1.21, and snapshot builds are published too. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Key features

  1. Multiple eggs per type

Each variant of an entity type can have its own spawn egg instead of sharing one.

  2. Preserved egg colors

Spawn eggs for variants keep their colors, so a variant egg no longer falls back to the base type's color.

  3. Constructor ID handling

The mod changes how the ID is registered inside the SpawnEggItem constructor, using putIfAbsent instead.

  4. Tutorial for authors

A short guide covers subclassing SpawnEggItem, registering colors in ClientModInitializer and overriding useOn.

Use cases

Variant mob packs

Mod authors adding variants such as cat or wolf types can give each variant a spawn egg of its own.

Who it’s for: The mod suits mod developers and modpack builders who add entity variants and want a separate spawn egg for each. Players rarely need to work with it directly.

What the author says

For users: Some mods may rely on things this mod does in the background to function properly. Just install it alongside any mod that requires it on both client and server. Use Case: If a mod you have installed adds multiple spawn eggs for the same type of mob (i.e. for different variants), and one of the spawn eggs…
