Smart Refill

by adamjaroui23

Smart Refill is a Fabric client mod that refills empty hotbar slots from matching items in the inventory, without any server-side install.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT License1.21.4 – 1.21.11

What it does

When a hotbar slot runs empty, Smart Refill looks through the inventory for a stack of the same item and moves it into that slot at once. The refill keeps the item's data, including NBT and components, so enchantments and custom names carry over to the replacement stack. It works in survival and creative mode, and the creative refill is handled in the style of infinite stacks.

Only the client needs the mod, so players can join multiplayer servers without it, and servers run without any change. Configuration is available in the in-game config screen, which is reached through Mod Menu. Cloth Config API supplies that screen, and Fabric API is needed as well, so both must be installed alongside Smart Refill.

Files cover Minecraft 1.21.4 and 1.21.11, with 1.0.1 for 1.21.11 as the latest build, published on 2026-09-29. The first release date was 2026-05-08. The code is under the MIT License, so the mod is not open source in the strict sense of its repository being public.

Key features

  1. Instant hotbar refill

An empty hotbar slot is filled from the inventory the moment it runs out, so building and combat keep their rhythm.

  2. Item data preserved

The replacement keeps the original item's NBT and component data, so enchanted and named items are restored intact.

  3. Survival and creative support

The refill runs in both survival and creative mode, with creative handled through infinite-style stacking.

  4. In-game configuration

Options can be changed in a config screen that integrates with Mod Menu, with no file editing required.

Use cases

Building with blocks

Blocks in the hotbar are topped up automatically, so a builder does not stop to refill a stack by hand.

Combat and movement

Potions, food and tools return to the hotbar mid-fight, keeping the next item within reach.

Who it’s for: Players on Fabric who play survival, creative or multiplayer and want hotbar slots refilled without manual inventory moves.
