Slow Start

by Azertium

Slow Start makes the first hours of a Fabric survival world slower by changing crafting recipes, loot tables and smelting times.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT License1.21.2 – 26.3

What it does

Early progression takes longer under this mod. Wood cannot be gathered with bare hands, so the first tools require a stick, and sticks come from leaves, bamboo, dead bushes or saplings. Sticks are also needed to make planks. Stone tools are limited to stone, deepslate and blackstone, which keeps players relying on wood tools for longer.

Smelting is reworked across the game. Food, stones and ores each fall into their own category, and each category has its own cooking time per furnace type, including the campfire, which changes the most. Furnace recipes are also different. Beds require leather to craft. Iron armor is crafted by surrounding an existing chainmail armor piece with four iron, and chainmail armor is the result instead of iron armor being made directly.

The mod adds 19 advancements that guide players through the changed steps. It runs on the server alone, so players join without installing it. It is released under the MIT License and is not open source, and it requires Fabric API. Files are published for Fabric only, covering 1.21.2 – 26.3 across 15 release versions, with 1.6.0 as the latest file for 26.3.

Key features

  1. Wood gathering changed

Bare hands cannot break wood, so players need a stick from leaves, bamboo, dead bushes or saplings first.

  2. Reworked smelting times

Food, stones and ores each have separate cooking times, and the campfire is changed the most.

  3. Iron armor through chainmail

Iron armor is built by placing four iron around a chainmail armor piece, so chainmail becomes the intermediate step.

  4. Nineteen new advancements

The 19 added advancements point players toward the new recipes and early steps.
