Desolate

by Azertium

Desolate is a Forge world generation mod that adds a burnt biome, its trees and blocks, and a few new food and ore sources to the overworld.

ForgeClient and serverMIT License1.20.1

What it does

The mod's goal is to add biomes that feel unlike most vanilla overworld biomes, with a bleak, lifeless tone that is even hostile to players. The current release adds only one biome, Burnt Forests, which is covered in ashes. Burnt Trees grow there despite the name, and their fungus-like form sets them apart from vanilla trees. Creepers and Silverfish spawn in the Burnt Forests alongside the usual monsters. Small Burnt Cabins generate within the biome as a simple structure.

The mod also adds Cruenum Forests, a warm biome where Cruenum Trees grow. Burnt Stems come from the Burnt Trees and are used to craft a separate set of blocks and simple wooden tools. Raw Steel is made from raw iron and coal, smelted into steel ingots, and those can be pressed into steel blocks like copper, then cut into stairs and slabs. The mod also adds Crates and Reinforced Crates for storage, plus Ashes and Hardened Ashes, where only Ashes respond to gravity. Cender Berries are a food source from bushes that grow only in the Burnt Forest biomes, and each one restores 4 hunger points when eaten.

Desolate is published for Forge only, for Minecraft 1.20.1, and is released under the MIT License without being open source. The server and every player need the mod installed.

How it compares

Full comparison

Mystic Forest is a Forge world generation mod for 1.20.1 that is not open source and is released with all rights reserved. Terminnus Crates adds storage blocks on the same Forge version under the same terms, so it covers the storage side that Desolate also adds. Hot Lava (Biome) is another Forge biome mod for 1.20.1, also all rights reserved, which differs from Desolate in its biome theme rather than its ashen, lifeless focus.

Questions

Does Desolate need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Which Minecraft version does Desolate support?

Desolate has a single Forge build, the 1.1.1 file for Minecraft 1.20.1, published on 2024-07-07.

Where can Steel be found?

Steel is a rare ore outside the Burnt Forests, and the biome holds plenty of it, so players usually look for it there.
