Shader Carry

by PGC

Shader Carry works as a client-side add-on to Carry, correcting how carried entities and blocks are drawn when Iris or Oculus shaders are active.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 26.2

What it does

Carried animals, mobs and blocks can disappear or show broken lighting when a shader pack is active, because the original Carry mod draws them through a custom rendering buffer that turns off vanilla depth testing and disrupts how shaders calculate light and geometry. Shader Carry replaces that renderer with vanilla RenderLayer, entity and ItemRenderer calls, so carried objects are drawn the way the game normally draws them.

Once the vanilla path is used, carried entities and blocks are attached to the player's body layer and move smoothly with the camera. They are meant to receive accurate shadows, lighting and normal maps from the active shader. The mod works with Iris, Oculus and OptiFine shader setups, and it needs Carry installed to function. Shader Carry is open source under the MIT License and is published for Fabric only, with files for 1.20.1 – 26.2 and 1.1.0 for 26.2 as the latest build.

Key features

  1. Visible carried mobs

Animals and mobs picked up with Carry stay visible instead of vanishing while a shader pack is enabled.

  2. Correct block lighting

Carried chests and blocks no longer show half-black shadows and render with the shader's lighting.

  3. Vanilla render path

Carried objects are drawn through the vanilla RenderLayer and ItemRenderer code rather than a separate buffer.

  4. Body-attached rendering

Carried entities and blocks follow the player's body layer and keep pace with the camera during movement.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who use Carry together with Iris, Oculus or OptiFine shaders. Servers do not need the mod, since it is client-side only and only the player's own game runs it.

How it compares

Full comparison

Disable Lighting is client-side only, released under the CC0 1.0 Universal license and is open source, with Fabric files for 1.21 – 26.3. Krpmon Lite is not open source, is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and targets 1.21.11 – 26.2 on Fabric. Shader Carry is client-side only, open source under the MIT License and covers 1.20.1 – 26.2, so it reaches older builds than either.

Questions

Does Shader Carry need Carry installed?

Yes. Shader Carry is an add-on and requires the Carry mod to be present for its rendering changes to apply.

Do servers need Shader Carry?

No. The mod is client-side only, so only the player's own game needs it and servers run without it.

Which shader loaders does it work with?

It is listed as compatible with Iris, Oculus and OptiFine shader packs, which are the setups where carried objects broke.

Which game versions have files?

Fabric files exist for 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.1, 1.21.4, 26.1.2 and 26.2, with the latest 1.1.0 file for 26.2.

What the author says

A client-side add-on for the Carry On mod that completely fixes rendering issues when playing with Shaders (Iris, Oculus, Optifine). This happens because the original mod uses a custom rendering buffer and disables vanilla depth testing, which breaks how shaders calculate light and geometry.
