Sepals
by cao-awa
Sepals is a server-side optimization mod for Fabric and NeoForge that rewrites a small set of expensive vanilla routines, not the whole game.
What it does
Sepals targets specific performance bottlenecks in the server, mainly the AI entity processing task systems. Its first collection rewrites villager brain logic, frog behavior and filtering of nearby-entity sensing, instead of applying broad general changes the way Lithium does. Scenes with large villager halls, dense mob enclosures and hundreds or thousands of entities are where the changes are meant to show, with tick time falling most in small areas packed with the most expensive vanilla AI operations.
The mod is experimental and is described by its author as extremely radical. Gains are not promised to match vanilla in every test, and on an ordinary survival server with small farms, the difference is probably hard to notice. Sepals runs on the server alone, so players join without installing anything. It is published for Fabric and NeoForge across 13 release versions 1.21 – 26.3, and it depends on Daisy, which must be installed beside it. The code is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and it is open source, with public links to the source code and issue tracker.
Key features
Villager brain rewrite
Villager AI routines are replaced with a leaner task system aimed at the cost of dense villager populations.
Frog behavior optimization
Frog behavior logic is reworked to reduce the tick cost of large numbers of frogs in one place.
Nearby-entity sensing filter
Entity sensing is filtered so that mobs check only the neighbors relevant to their current task.
Entity cramming target
Scenes with entities packed into small spaces are the main test case, where tick time reduction is largest.

How it compares
Lithium is a mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt covering 1.16.2 – 26.3, and it is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only; it works on either side, and neither needs it. Async is server-side only for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.21 – 26.3, licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Where Lithium applies broad changes, Sepals concentrates on a few expensive routines, and it can be run alongside Async.
