Rubidium

by Asek3

Rubidium is a client-side rendering optimization for Forge and NeoForge, an unofficial fork of a rendering engine made to work with FML.

ForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.16.5 – 1.20.1

What it does

Rubidium reduces the work the game does when drawing terrain. Vertex data for rendered chunks is packed more compactly, which lowers video memory and bandwidth needs by close to 40 percent. Chunk loading and block rendering receive a set of optimizations, so chunks load faster and frame rates dip less while they do.

Vertex building and matrix transformations are optimized as well, which speeds up the drawing of block entities, mobs and items in rooms that hold many of them. Memory handling and object allocation are also reworked, cutting memory use and the lag spikes that garbage collection can cause. Fluids and certain special blocks gain lighting that looks smoother, and biome transitions on blocks and fluids blend more gently, while animated textures that are out of view are skipped, which helps texture updates on most hardware.

Rubidium is built for Forge and NeoForge in game versions 1.16.5 – 1.20.1, with the latest files for 1.20.1 released on 2023-09-24. It runs on the client only, so servers do not need it. The code is under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only and is open source. Six other catalog mods require it, including Oculus and TexTrue's Rubidium Options.

Key features

  1. Compact chunk vertex data

Rendered chunk vertex data is packed more tightly, cutting video memory and bandwidth requirements by almost 40 percent.

  2. Faster chunk loading

Chunk loading and block rendering are optimized, reducing the frame rate drops that occur while chunks load.

  3. Faster entity and item drawing

Vertex building and matrix transformations are optimized, so block entities, mobs and items draw more quickly.

  4. Lower memory use

Object allocation and memory management are improved, reducing consumption and garbage collector lag spikes.

  5. Smooth lighting and biome blending

Smooth lighting applies to fluids and special blocks, and biome blending for blocks and fluids is smoother at lower computational cost.

Questions

Does Rubidium need to be installed on the server?

No. The mod is client-side only, so only the player's client needs it.

Which loaders does Rubidium support?

Rubidium has files for Forge and NeoForge. The latest file for either loader is 0.7.1 for 1.20.1, released on 2023-09-24.

Why do other mods require Rubidium?

Six catalog mods, including Oculus and Sodium/Rubidium Occlusion Culling Fix, list Rubidium as a required dependency.

In the catalog

Rubidium is one of 3,545 Optimization mods on ModsFinder, and one of 1,441 Optimization mods for Forge. 34,764 mods support Minecraft 1.20.1.
