Rotting Food
by Wayzle
Rotting Food adds a spoilage mechanic to food items, so eaten-later meals lose their original effects as days pass in the world.
What it does
Food items move through stages as world days pass, and each stage can change nutrition, saturation, eating time, color and effects. Stages are ordered from highest to lowest, and the highest matching one applies first. Duration is measured in world days, and food does not rot right away after it is obtained. Changes are written as simple equations of the original value, such as x 2 + 1, or as a plain number.
The mod works on food added by other mods as well as vanilla items, and it is meant to be combined with favorite food mods. A randomiseFoodState option gives food items a random starting state within a range set by maxRandomState, so a value of 2 yields either state 0 or 1. The mod also adds more chests filled with food and more food farms. Its configuration is driven by oωo (owo-lib), which must be installed as a required dependency.
Rotting Food targets Fabric only and runs on client and server, so both the server and every player need it. Files exist for 1.21 – 1.21.10, with 0.5.1+1.21.9 for 1.21.10 as the latest build, and the code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.
Key features
Staged spoilage
Each food gains stages that change its values once a set number of world days has passed.
Custom stage effects
A stage can add its own effects, and food keeps its original effects in that stage.
Random starting state
Food can begin in a random state within a configured range, so identical items may differ.
Equation-based values
Nutrition, saturation and eating time are set with equations based on the original value.
Removable rotting
Turning off the component setting removes the rotting behavior from items, which then behave as normal food.
