FabricForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

Rosen adds 18 noteblock instruments, among them saxophone, organ, sitar and music box, with sound design kept at the level of vanilla Minecraft. A quality-of-life addition lets a noteblock play any existing instrument while standing on a block of a similar type, so the instrument choice is not fixed by the block below.

Custom instruments can be added in 1.21.1 and later through a datapack. A new JSON file named after the instrument, placed under the data.rosen namespace, defines the noteblock instrument. A second file, a block tag for noteblocks, lists the blocks that trigger it, and the used instrument follows the regular tag format. Players and server owners on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge get the same content, since the environment is client and server and the mod is published for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 across seven release versions.

Key features

  1. 18 added instruments

Instruments such as saxophone, organ, sitar and box timpani join the noteblock's existing sounds.

  2. Instrument on similar blocks

A noteblock can play an existing instrument while placed on a block of a similar type.

  3. Vanilla-level sound design

The new instruments are tuned to match the sound quality of the instruments already in the game.

  4. Datapack instrument format

Server owners can define custom instruments with a JSON file and a noteblock block tag, without writing Java code.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who build music with noteblocks, and server owners who want more instruments without installing a separate sound mod. Both the server and every player need the mod, since the environment is client and server.
