RailOptimization
by EasterGhost2
Powered rails and activator rails switch on and off faster in large networks, once RailOptimization is installed on a server.
What it does
The mod changes how powered rails and activator rails update their state. In complex networks with straight, ascending, descending and mixed-slope sections, the updates finish up to 20 times faster than vanilla. Repeated updates that leave a rail's power state unchanged also cost much less. The default power range of 8 is kept unless an administrator changes it.
Fabric API must be present on Fabric installs. Lithium is optional; when it is installed, RailOptimization draws on its storage code and tracks block changes alongside it. The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 40 release versions, 1.16 – 26.3, with snapshot builds also available. The code is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, so the project is open source.
The 20x figure comes from local benchmarks run at the default power range, comparing optimized and unoptimized updates on the same loader. Actual gains depend on rail layout, server load, hardware and other mods. The benchmark covers turning rails on and off; the unchanged-state result is a separate measure and not a whole-server speedup.
Key features
Faster rail updates
Powered and activator rails update their state much faster across straight, sloped and mixed rail networks.
Cheaper repeated updates
Updates that leave a rail's power state unchanged are handled with a much smaller cost.
Adjustable power range
The power range can be set from 1 to 64, and the vanilla default of 8 stays in place unless it is changed.
Switch to vanilla logic
Vanilla and optimized update logic can be swapped at runtime, so a contraption can be compared with the original behavior.
Settings file
Settings are stored in railoptimization.json and persist across restarts, and changing them requires administrator permission.

Use cases
Large rail transit networks
Servers with long powered-rail lines, station switches and branching track can use the mod to reduce update delays.
Redstone contraption testing
Builders can disable the optimization and trigger a contraption again to check for behavioral differences against vanilla.
Who it’s for: Server owners running large rail networks, and builders who want faster powered and activator rail updates on a server they administer.
How it compares
Copper Powered Rails is server required with the client optional, under the MIT License, and is not open source; its files cover 1.17 – 26.2. Rail Recipe Rebalance is also server required with the client optional, under the MIT License, and not open source; it covers 1.15 – 26.2 and changes recipes rather than update speed. Activator Rail Crafting Output 16 is server required with the client optional, under All rights reserved, and covers 1.21.4 – 26.2.

What the author says
RailOptimization is a lightweight mod that makes powered rails and activator rails turn on and off up to 20x faster in complex rail networks. The best result is that you notice nothing while it is operating, except smoother and faster rail updates. Vanilla behavior and the default power range are preserved unless you…
